Henri Charles Manguin ( 1874 - 1948 ) was a French born painter associated with The Fauvist Movement. He studied at The Ecole Des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Gustave Moreau, as did Henri Matisse with whom he became close friends. Greatly influenced by Impressionism, as seen in his use of bright pastel hues. Many of his paintings were Mediterranean landscapes ; and would represent the height of his career as a Fauve artist.
Along with Andre Derain and Henri Matisse, Manguin is considered one of the principal figures in The Fauvism Art Movement. They all exhibited their highly innovative paintings at the controversial Salon D'Automne in 1905. The vivid, unnatural colors led the art critic Louis Vauxcelles to name their works as " Les Fauves ", or " The Wild Beasts ", marking the start of The Fauvist Movement. Artworks by Manguin are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
