This " Jean Michel Basquiat : Drawing " rare first edition lithograph print large hardcover exhibition art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by Rizzoli International Publications, New York and Acquavella Galleries, printed in 2014 by Phoenix Lithographing Philadelphia Pennsylvania, on the occasion of the exhibition at The Acquavella Galleries in New York City. It features a monograph survey of the drawing artworks of the artist Jean Michel Basquiat, with compelling accompanied text authored by gallerist curator Fred Hoffman, book design by HVdesign New York.
Jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) was born in Brooklyn New York in 1960. His early creative career was as the Street Graffiti artist nick named " Samo " on New York City's Lower East Side in The Late 1970's. By The Early 1980's with the help of his friend Andy Warhol, Basquiat to began to make his emotionally charged Neo Expressionist paintings. In 1992 The Whitney Museum held a major retrospective of the life works of this great American Contemporary artist and master of social commentary.
His work focused on suggestive dichotomies such as wealth vs poverty, integration vs segregation, and inner vs outer experience of the human condition. He appropriated poetry, drawing, painting, and married text and image with Abstraction and Figuration. Basquiat's works had strong social commentary and deeper truths about the individual and the power structures of racism, and criticism of colonialism and support for class struggles.
This is the first book on the drawings and works of paper of this legendary cult artist. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name " Jean Michel Basquiat : Drawing, work from The Schorr Family Collection " is the first book on the Schorr collection of Basquiat's works on paper. Hebert and Leonore Schorr began collecting the works of Basquiat in 1981, before his first New York exhibition. During the artist's seminal years of 1982-83, the Schorrs acquired several of his most important paintings, but in contrast to virtually every other collector, the Schorrs also pursued and acquired a great number of works on paper both directly from the artist and from his first dealer. Their collection demonstrates the focus and ambition that Basquiat invested in the medium of drawing.
