This Arshile Gorky " The Breakthrough Years " rare vintage 1995 first edition Abstract Expressionist hardcover exhibition art book is a very special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with monochrome embossed cover titles, and dust jacket is published by The Museum of Modern Art Fort Worth, Texas in association with Rizzoli International Publications New York. Printed in Italy in 1995 on the occasion of the museum exhibition. Authored by Michael Auping, with additional essays by Dore Ashton and Matthew Spender.
Arshile Gorky ( 1904 - 1948 ) is an Armenian American painter who held a seminal influence on Abstract Expressionism. Along with Rothko, Pollock and De Kooning, Gorky is hailed as one of the most important American artists of The Twentieth Century. His works were often speculated to have been informed by the suffering and loss he experienced in the Armenian genocide. Artworks by Gorky are held in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Gorky is recognized as one of the most crucial and intriguing figures in the early foundations of The Abstract Expressionist Movement. He pioneered a complex visual vocabulary of forms and
imagery. His most important works were created from 1940 through 1947, regarded by many as his " Breakthrough " period. His rich mature work of these years is the focus of this illuminating volume, the most comprehensive book on the subject.
Michael Auping museum curator of Modern Art offers valuable text providing an introduction to the life and art of Gorky as well as an insightful consideration of the grand psychological landscape of his work, and the development of Gorky's pivotal style. Dore Ashton writes a lucid account of the artist who tends to resist classification. Matthew Spender provides biographical details of Gorky's early years, and a selection of Gorky's personal letters further sheds an intimate light on the artist and his achievements.
The rare out of print 1st edition hardcover art exhibition book measures 10 1/8" W X 10 1/8" H X 7/8" D, with 188 pages. It features 63 illustrations including 42 full page plates.
