These handmade vintage studio art pottery cups by Edwin Scheier (1910-2008) and Mary Scheier (1908-2007) were created early in their … Read more These handmade vintage studio art pottery cups by Edwin Scheier (1910-2008) and Mary Scheier (1908-2007) were created early in their ceramics career circa 1948. Much has been written about the significance of the Scheiers and their impact on modern American ceramics. The Newark Museum purchased 3 nearly identical rooster cups and one pitcher from the Scheiers for their collection in 1949. The Newark examples were included in the exhibition “Decorative Arts Today” (1949) and then again in “Great Pots: Contemporary Ceramics from Function to Fantasy” (2003) where one is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue. The catalogue notes , “Its sleek modern forms are given a rustic… look with the use of simple sgrafitto decoration…. The craftsmanship, of course, is breathtaking, as good as any potting of its time.”

These delicate beakers were mean to be used and would be great on display or used as small flower vases in a grouping. They would also be a wonderful addition to a collection of American modernist pottery.

Five roosters are incised around each cup, and the brown glaze is incised through to orange. Interior of cup is also orange. “Scheier” is incised on the bottom of each cup. The Newark Museum of Art was kind to assist in acquiring documentation on the comparable items in their collection. These materials will be given to the buyer.

Condition: One cup has 2 glaze flakes at rim; otherwise, all else is perfect. See less
