A very stylish, elegant pair of early to mid 20th century Italian giltwood girandole mirrors. The expertly-crafted frames are entirely hand carved from wood and include metal candleholders with tole leaf decoration. The wood has a red bole color with traces of gold, and each one includes a mirrored panel with eglomise / reverse painted glass in a dusty rose color fading to gray. (These are not traditional silvered mirrors.) The glass has a wonderfully aged, foxed patina.
The elongated design has a very modern feel, and these girandoles could easily be wired as electric sconces if desired. The arms are hollow tubing opening to the back and could conceal wiring.
Signed on the reverse of each in ink “M. ITALY / - A.C.S. 30 -“
Given the delicate nature of the carving, their structural condition is remarkably good with only one minor chip missing to a carved area. This is noted in the second to last photo, which can be compared with the last photo. The chip has been expertly colored and is difficult to detect. The wonderfully aged patina has been noted above. See photos.
