Keith Haring ( 1958 - 1990 ) was an incredibly vibrant American artist and social activist who's artwork responded to the 1908's Street culture by expressing concepts of birth, death, love, sexuality, and war. Haring's work was often heavily political, his imagery became a widely recognized vivid and iconic visual language of The 20th Century. Haring's close friends and Inspirational contemporaries included Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat and Madonna all of whom he collaborated with in his lifetime. Artworks by Haring are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In the 1980's urban Street culture became a defining influence on art, fashion, and music, particularly in New York City. Keith Haring's unique imagery, which began as graffiti in the streets and subways, became a signature style of The Late Twentieth Century. Accompanying a comprehensive Haring retrospective at The Whitney Museum, this book establishes the origins of his art and traces its meteoric rise from the underground culture of The East Village to the commercial systems of the art world, and finally to popular culture on an international level. While making art that was unfailingly optimistic, he raged against intolerance and shared anguish of a generation that found itself living through plague years.
