19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Bed with Caning is a splendid example of what some have called 'Paris Country' where a refined style is made more casual primarily by a finish treatment. Produced by Hopilliart & Leroy in Paris, it ably expresses the neoclassical style that so enamored Louis XVI and his queen. The design reflects a headboard and footboard differing only in height and proportion. Both feature very subtly arched crowns with egg & dart trim under which appears carvings that can be best described as gathered fabric. The crown is connected to cornerposts with pomegranite finials atop plinths with rosettes, which in turn rest upon tapered columns with spiral flutes and acanthus plume bases. The columns rest upon larger plinths with rosettes where the lower frameworks attach as well as the side rails, which are carved with pronounced spiral ribbon motif. Tapered and fluted legs provide support. The head and footboard frameworks both surround caning, and in the case of the footboard, a double layer for added longevity. The painted finish is a lovely taupe that has achieved an incredible patina and charm over the past century.
The bed is depicted without slats to allow for versatility. Slats are included in the price, and upon the customer's request flush mount slats can be provided which will allow one to use a full size mattress set to ride atop the rails, or if a custom mattress is preferred to ride inside the rails, the slats can be recessed from the top edge in a more traditional manner.
Circa 1880s
Headboard measures 50.5H x 51W; footboard is 34H x 51W; rails are 76L less
