This rare vintage 1961 first edition lithograph print slipcase hardcover collector's book " The Artists' & Writers' Cookbook " is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with slipcase protective cover is published by Contact Editions Sausalito California and Angel Island Publications in 1961, edited by Beryl Barr and Barbara Turner Sachs, with a forward by Alice B. Toklas. Book designed by Nicolas Sidjakov, typography by Charles H. Falk Studio, lithograph printed by American printing and Lithography Company.
There is an undisputable charm to cookbooks inspired by art and literature, but none come close toe the magnificent beautifully designed " Artists' & Writers' Cookbook ". A lavish volume, illustrated with 19th Century engravings and drawings by Marcel Duchamp, Robert Osborne and Alexander Istrati.
It features more than 200 recipes and 30 courses by 55 painters, 61 novelists, 15 sculptors, and 19 poets, including such luminaries as Man Ray, John Keats, Marcel Duchamp, Lawrence Durrell, Robert Graves, Harper Lee, Karel Appel, Irving Stone, William Styron, Sam Francis, Pierre Soulages, Paul Bowles, Pearl Buck, Helen Frankenthaler, George Simeon, and many many more.
The diverse contributors take the collaboration with various degrees of seriousness, some sharing their recipes in earnest and others using the cookbook as a canvas for wit and creativity, all having invariable and obvious fun with the project.
The rare out of print 1st edition lithograph print slipcase collector's cookbook measures 7 3/4" W X 10 1/4" H X 1 1/2" D, with 308 pages, plus comments from the editors, contributors list with a brief biography of each contributor.
