Description: This style of chairs is known as "official's hat chair" because the projections over the rear stiles resemble the knobs … more This style of chairs is known as "official's hat chair" because the projections over the rear stiles resemble the knobs on the black hats once worn by high-ranking administrators in Ming Dynasty. The chairs are high back and handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. Intricate carvings of traditional Chinese design motif decorate the back splats of the chair. Both arm and back splat of the chair are crafted with deep curves. The front opening underneath the seats are uniquely carved into "arch" shape. Made from Elm wood with beautiful wood grain, chair is very solid and has been kept in excellent condition. Original patina and wear. Circa early of 19th century.
