This large French cherub or cupid statue from the 1800’s is made from plaster that has been tinted to mimic the natural color of terra cotta. The figure has been placed in a non-traditional contrapposto stance, meaning all his weight is on one foot. The cherub is depicted as striding across contoured ground with a determined look in his eyes and hands clenched. Notice the two nestling birds beneath his back leg: these represent doves known as love birds, which along with cupid, have long been symbols of love.
At over three-and-a-half feet tall, our 19th century French cherub statute would make a fascinating decorative display. He is tall enough to be displayed directly on the floor but would look stunning placed on top of a table or pedestal.
