Rare extra large Japanese Satsuma Vase with two handles, gilded, with raised relief and superb carving, depicting on the large gilded vignette on the front two figures and temple, and extra large iris flowers on the back, sides and handles. Minor age wear. Excellent condition, no cracks or chips. Like most Satsuma pieces, the vase is unmarked. This piece represents Japanese artworks that influenced European artists in the end of 19th century in the movement of Art Nouveau (Japonisme) as a new art style. The vase was purchased in Japan in 1960s and brought to the U.S. later by Asian Art collector that lived in Japan for several years. Japan, circa 1850.
