Heather Foster was born in Philadelphia and grew up taking art classes at the local community centers and, while in high school, attended extracurricular art classes at Moore College of Art, the Philadelphia College of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Foster received her BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 1990 and went on to work for several years in the field of painting conservation and restoration before beginning a career as a fine artist. Foster has exhibited widely and with success and her artwork has been featured in art magazines including Southwest Art, American Art Collector, and Western Art Collector. Her work has also illustrated several books including, 'Art Journey, New Mexico' and 'The Book of the Horse'.
The artist has said: "I... start each painting with bold blocks of color to work out my composition. I like to see evidence of the thought process, the changes and refinements in drawing and the composition evident on the canvas itself. This under painting sometimes has a complementary color and sometimes an analogous one compared with what I imagine will be the final layer. In order to keep the eye moving across the canvas and to create depth, I like to vary the resolution of the upper layers, sometimes keeping an area loose with the underpainting showing through and sometimes bringing out more detail." less
