The softcover book with laminated covers is published by The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Printed in 1994 in Germany on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the artworks of Roy Lichtenstein at The Guggenheim Museum New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Haus Der Kunst Munich, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Palais Des Beaux-Arts Brussels, and Wexner Center for the Arts Columbus, Ohio.
Roy Lichtenstein ( 1923 - 1997 ) The American born Pop artist of a jewish background, is one of the most well known and loved worldwide Contemporary artists. During the 1960's along with Andy Warhol among others, he became a leading figure in the new Pop Art movement. His work defined the premise of Pop Art through parody. Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions often in a tongue in cheek manner. The artworks of Lichtenstein are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This exhibition art book surveys and defines the great American Pop Art master artist Roy Lichtenstein's career as a profound and all encompassing oeuvre. Lichtenstein and The Guggenheim Museum have a long standing relationship. The museum mounted its first retrospective exhibition of this most enduring and important artist in 1969, and nearly 25 years later, presented this second landmark retrospective. In addition his paintings, sculptures, and works on paper figure proudly in the museum's permanent collection.
The book's author Dianne Waldman, deputy director and senior curator assesses Lichtenstein's achievements as a highly complex and visual intellectual statement in his ability to produce memorable imagery and to discover the psychological reactions we have to specific subject matter. In bringing together works spanning Lichtenstein's entire career, this book and exhibition make evident his achievement, presenting a new vision based on his understanding of Modern Art.
