This set, in its original case, belonged to my maternal grandmother who was from Mexico. I received the set when she passed away in 1978 and have been carting it around for the last 44 years but have never used it. Since our move, I need to downsize things that while lovely, will not be used. So it’s time to find this gorgeous set a fabulous new home, yours perhaps? From what I was told by my mom, my grandma acquired this set sometime in the mid to late 1930s to early 1940s. Alpacca is an alloy of nickel, copper and zinc, forming a silvery white metal, imitating silver, but with no silver content. Other names for this mix of metal are Albata, German silver, nickel silver, N.S. (Nickel silver), white metal. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc. It’s a beautiful, timeless set with a simple floral trellis pattern in excellent condition for its age with minimal wear. I’ve kept it polished, as seen in the photos by using Wright’s Silver Polish every 10 years or so. Handwashing and drying is recommended. It is a 24 piece set in its original case. There are no salad forks in the set. The case looks worn but is in sound condition with the exception of the snap closure tops, which have broken off (see photo 6). The set consists of the following:

6 – Case Knives (handles are alpacca; blades are stainless “cufin” aka stainless steel)

6 - Tablespoons
6 - Teaspoons

Alpaca may not quite live up to the reputation silver has but it has found its niche within the world of metals. For a lover of timeless or classic vintage flatware, this beautiful set is a must have or the perfect gift for someone who is!
