Artist Statement:
My artistic impulse stems from a desire to record and comment on my environment. I attempt to convey the beauty and extraordinaries in what I have seen daily during my life in Sacramento. The rich and varied natural landscapes, the imprint of agriculture, the evolution of the distinctive urban milieu, and the people are fertile sources of exploitation for visual artistic expression.
When creating a work, I seek a strong visual image at the onset, one that invites and supports a second look. I build upon the image through employment of lime, form, color perspective light and texture. I exploit rhythm, surprise, energy, mystery, and playfulness in enhancing the interest and brio in the depiction. Often I infuse elements of abstraction to compliment or suggest familiar forms whose details become supplied by the viewers.
Frequently I exploit texture to add vitality and interest to the nature and variety of applications of paint and color to canvas, and to augment the rhythm and animation of forms in my painting. In oil, acrylic, and watercolor works. I sometimes use a collage technique whereby I apply paint to paper, let it dry, and then tear it into irregular pieces that I affix to the image bringing a distinct dimension to composition and color placement.
In the course of creating, I develop engagement and affection for the images I paint, which I hope is evident and shared by those who see them.
