Signed lower right, 'Van Pitterson' for Lloyd H. Van Pitterson (Jamaican, 1926-1997) and created circa 1985. Additionally, inscribed, verso, 'Pink Balcony'.
Born in Jamaica in the West Indies, Lloyd van Pitterson worked in the rum industry for twenty-two years while studying and painting in his spare time. In 1965, he decided to fully commit himself to a career as a fine artist and first studied with Edna Manley, the leading West Indian sculptor of her day. He later became a student of Joe Locke, the English Impressionist artist who made his home on the island. Van Pitterson subsequently studied lithography and and serigraphy with Jules Andres in New Jersey and was also commissioned to create a number of public murals. In addition to his career as a painter and graphic artist, Van Pitterson also taught art at Central Branch School in Jamaica,
In Jamaica, he opened and directed his own art gallery, 'The Art Scene' before immigrating to the United States. He painted in a variety of styles and his work ranges from sunny post-Impressionistic studies of balconies and windows opening onto the sea to landscapes, bustling market scenes and vivid non-objective collages. All his works share a bold approach to composition and a nuanced sensitivity to color. Over the course of a long career, Van Pitterson exhibited internationally with success. He was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and his paintings are held in private and public collections world-wide.
