more
A sleek and elegant small serpentine block front commode of a type called a sauteuse due to the tall legs from which it springs. The design is a sought after type that was made concurrently in Northern Italy and Southern Germany in the 18th century. The figured walnut is light and honey toned with darker figure, each drawer front with wide cross banding around marquetry inlaid panels. Fine brass hardware is later, of appropriate form. The legs are cabriolet in form, the front ones ending in triffid feet, the rear with subtle hooves. Second half of the 18th century. Good restored condition with a good French polished surface. Signs of age, worming distress, and typical restorations to the veneers.
