There are no tears, cracks, loose strings, stains or scratches on the canvas. There are some red splotches on the black border that are visible upon close inspection, yet this is a work of art, and that is how the painter exhibited it. Any wear is commensurate with its age and unframed state. It has been in a smoke-free home. less

This is an unframed stretched canvas original work of art by the Aboriginal painter and sculptor Violet Payne Ngale. The stretched canvas measures 37" x 1/2 x 37"" and the acrylic painted image within a black and white-dotted border measures 35 1/2" x 35 1/2". There are two criss-crossed wires (see photo) in order to select the option a person wishes to hang the painting.
According to the Red Kangaroo Gallery: "Dot painting originated around the 1970's, when Geoffrey Bardon was assigned as an Art Teacher for the children of the people in Papunya, near Alice Springs.
It is ironic that the technique of using dots, that many Western people regard as characteristic of contemporary Central and Western Desert Art was in fact to obscure certain revered knowledge. Artists developed this as a way of obscuring or hiding the meanings of some symbolism from those who were not privy to it."
Violet Payne Ngale paints the story of the wild tobacco and flowers proliferating naturally in Central Australia in the Utopia Region, north east of Alice Springs.
Dot work represents the seeds of the Ngkwerlp, a very important aspect of the story, promoting growth. The Ilkawerne women (U shaped symbols) are collecting the Ngkwerlp and have their digging sticks and coolamons (carved wooden bowls) -
The canvas is signed twice in magic marker on the rear side, it is dated 2007, and it is numbered MB34303 in the artist's catalog and comes with its authentication number (a sticker) adhered to the rear side. less
