The period was named after the marriage of the English Queen, Mary Stuart, and the Dutch Prince, William of Orange. William and Mary furniture is graceful and decorative, lighter, and thinner, with walnut being the most popular wood of choice.

This piece has been carved entirely from walnut with an oval top impressively veneered in burl walnut. Due to its unique grain pattern, burl walnut veneer is used as a natural decorative element. The burl itself is an abnormal growth on a walnut tree and when cut, has distinct swirls. This top is cleverly book-matched to capture the enchanting growth pattern of the burl walnut.

The Sutherland table is said to have been designed in 1822 for the Duchess of Sutherland (1806–1861). She was known for her various philanthropic undertakings including the protest against American slavery and support of the Italian patriot Garibaldi. Sutherland tables have two drop leaves that nearly reach the floor. These tables were versatile, and dainty looking and would allow a host to hold a full tea service or play games. Emphasizing comfort and versatility, Sutherland tables can accommodate any sitting arrangement. These characteristics made these tables popular.

The innovative table has a unique center pedestal/gateleg system that consists of four splayed legs with scroll feet flanked by four turned supports on casters. At first glance, it does not appear to be a gateleg table. When the table is open, it acts as a lovely pedestal table that can be used as elegantly as a breakfast or center table or as practical as a game or tea table. Then, in typical Sutherland fashion, can be closed, moved about, and stored in a narrow space. The table is uniquely designed to turn the pedestal base into gatelegs. The ingenious pedestal base separates into two sets of gate legs with latches on each side to secure the legs when the table is open (see image). There are stops on the bottom of the tabletop to ensure the legs swing out to a proper balanced position. This table would be perfect for game night, hosting a party, or just to admire in any setting.
