The design in the center of the tray is round shield containing eight interlaced squares which sits inside a five-pointed star. Surrounding the star is a ring of Arabic calligraphy and striking, almost whimsical, circle of animals. The artist completed the tray with a pierced basket-weave edge.

The tray is most likely North African dating to the late 19th century to early 20th century.
