This Josef Albers rare vintage 1973 Mid Century Modern custom framed Minimalist serigraph calendar print " Homage to the Square No. SP-1 ", is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The Modernist serigraph print is page from a large format fine art calendar of Mid century Modern serigraph prints published by Dumont Art, printed in an unnumbered limited edition in West Germany in 1973, in association with Universe Books new York City. It features an artwork image by Albers titled " Homage to the Square No. SP-1 ", Vorlage : Galerie Wilbrand - Edition : Galerie Der Spiegel - Copyright : Josef Albers.
Josef Albers ( 1888 - 1976 ) was a German born artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and The United States formed the basis of Modern Art education programs of The 20th Century. Albers was a student at The Bauhaus in 1920, later being invited by the founder Walter Gropius to become an educator at the school. There his students included established artists Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
In the 1930's Albers emigrated to The United Sates where he would become head of the new art school Black Mountain College, and later in the 1950's he became head of the department of design at Yale University. His students in America included Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Richard Anuskiewicz, and Eva Hesse among others.
Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer, printmaker, and poet, Albers is best remembered for his work as an Abstract painter and invaluable contributor as an art theorist of color theory. He is considered to be one of the most influential visual artists of The Twentieth Century. Artworks by Albers are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museum.
The rare out of print framed Modernist serigraph calendar print measures 23 1/4" W X 29 5/8" H X 1 1/2" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass, presented in a top float mounted presentation in a Contemporary Modern matte eggshell finish medium charcoal gray museum box style wood frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
It is in excellent " like new " condition. The calendar print is in excellent " like new " clean vintage condition consistent with age and very light signs of handling.
