It features an artwork image originally created by Noland in 1960 titled " Whirl ", Des Moines Art Center, Coffin Fine Arts Trust Fund, poster design by Malcom Grear Design.
Kenneth Noland ( 1924 - 2010 ) was an American Modernist painter. He was a primary force in the development of Postwar Abstract Art and one of best known Color Field painters. He was considered an Abstract Expressionist in the 1950's, and as a Minimalist painter in the 1960's. He studied Bauhaus design and color theory from the Modern Master educator Josef Albers. Noland helped to establish The Washington Color School Movement.
In 1977 he was honored by a major retrospective exhibition at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, which this exhibition poster is from. Instead of painting with a brush, Noland's style was to stain the canvas with color. This idea sought to remove the artist through brushstrokes, and made the piece more about the art, not the artist. Art works by Noland are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums.
