About The Poster: This poster is from a campaign for the Eau Sauvage fragrance by Dior done in the early 2000s. They took a risk by hiring comic book artists to create the ads, rather than relying on the usual photographers and models.
In this ad, we see a handsome marine by the name of Corto Maltese, the subject of Hugo Pratt's 1960s comic book series of the same name. The character is described as a "rogue with a heart of gold", who is tolerant and sympathetic to the underdog. As a boy growing up in the Jewish quarter of Córdoba, Maltese discovered that he had no fate line on his palm and therefore carved his own with his father's razor, determining that his fate was his to choose. The story centers around smugglers and pirates in the World War I–era Pacific Islands with stories ranging from straight historical adventure to occult dream sequences. The final book was published in June 1989, and has since been made available in multiple languages.
About the Artist: Hugo Eugenio Pratt (Italian) 1927-1995 "was an Italian comic book creator who was known for combining strong storytelling with extensive historical research on works such as Corto Maltese. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2005. [...] From 1970 to 1984, Pratt lived mainly in France where Corto Maltese, a psychologically very complex character resulting from the travel experiences and the endless inventive capacity of his author, became the main character of a comics series. Initially published from 1970 to 1973 by the magazine Pif gadget, it brought him much popular and critical success. Later published in album format, this series was eventually translated into fifteen languages." (Wikipedia)
