Very rare and collectible! This 1880’s multi colorful Earthenware transferware soup bowl in the Excelsior pattern features a lovely aesthetic design by Christopher Dresser. In the center are pictures of a sailing ship, woodland landscape and geometric designs. The wide flared rim has an overall puzzle-like pattern.
The dating for this bowl is January 8th, 1880 by the back stamp. This date information was found on the Old Hall Earthenware Co Itd site. The English Registry mark indicates a date of January 8, 1880, as well as the stamped mark "Old Hall - England - E' Ware Co (L)" and "Excelsior". This Soup Bowl has a great design, color and look.
The Old Hall Company was the first Pottery Company in Staffordshire to form a Ltd Company, incorporated in March 1861 which took over the Old Hall Pottery from the distinguished Charles Meigh & Son. They continued some of the patterns and molds of the earlier company but also produced the popular transferware patterns of "Willow" and "Asiatic Pheasants". Reformed as the Old Hall Porcelain Co Ltd in 1886.

The Soup Bowl is in great antique condition and has a few spots on the rim where the blue paint has come off. It has a wonderful antique look with crazing and some browning on the underside of the bowl.
