This is just a great original piece. When I first saw this piece hanging on the wall I thought it was the work of James Coignard. It took me a while to figure out who the artist was but once I did, it all made sense. Done by important French Contemporary artist Serge Helenon, this is really a stunning work. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful Abstract Carborundum engraving on paper measuring 23 x 18 inches. Signed and numbered from an edition of 95 in pencil along the bottom margin. Print is in excellent condition. There look like some faint outlines of water stains in a few spots in the background but I cannot be 100% sure they are not part of the print. Really I didnt even notice them for the first few days I was looking at the print. I mention them only as a matter of making a potential buyer aware of this very minor possible flaw. The print is floated in an archival 6 level matte with a black backing. On the very top white matte there looks to be very small faint water stains along the bottom margin. Truth is, these look like what happens when the print sits out in the sun for a short while and condensation happens behind the glass and then it drips down to the matte. Again, nothing too bad, and really it still is a stunning print with an excellent presentation. Frame measures 36 1/2 x 30 1/4 inches.
For those not familiar with the artist his biography from a gallery that sells his work reads: "Serge Hélénon was born in 1934 in Martinique. He was based in Paris executing printmaking published by Vision Nouvelle, as well as a painter. A well-listed artist, Hélénon's works may be found in many public and private collections around the world. Born in Martinique in 1934, Serge Hélénon trained at the School of Applied Arts in Fort-de-France before progressing to The School of Decorative Arts in Nice. During the 1960s, Hélénon exhibited his work at the same galleries as James Coignard, Henri Goetz and Max Papart, who collectively had many exhibitions on the French Riviera. In 1970, in collaboration with another West Indian artist, Louis Laouchez, he founded The Negro Caribbean School in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Their production and their respective education left a lasting mark on their students. The Vôhou - Vôhou movement they helped to introduce became a decisive milestone in the development of Ivory Coast contemporary art. Hélénon went on to teach in Senegal."
