Antique Madeira hand embroidered linen tablecloth with twelve matching napkins. This tablecloth is elaborate and beautiful - densely embroidered, with extensive cutwork on top. An heirloom set, perfect for holidays and special occasions.
Gorgeous 1960's Madeira Round Tablecloth and matching 12 napkins. Purchased at a very fine furniture store in Holland during my honeymoon. Shop was called Pander Passage in The Hague, Netherlands. I remember it being from Switzerland, made of Irish linen. It is a show stopper and sets a beautiful table. We used it on a 60 inch round and on a 48 inch round table. Used twice when we lived back East, a few very very faint spots. I had it dry cleaned once, and hand washed once in the bathtub with Orvus Quilt soap recommended by Martha Stewart for caring for antique linens and lace.
The embroidery done on the Portuguese island of Madeira was first “discovered” by the English Miss Phelps, in 1850. She brought back trunks of the exceptional embroidery work, made by the Portuguese peasant women. Passed from generation to generation, their skill with the needle was incomparable. Soon English upper class ladies all wanted to have their large trousseaux stitched and embroidered in Madeira.
Set of 12 Napkins are 17 1/2 X 16 1/2, Cloth is approximately 86" across point to point. less
