It is … Read more This artwork "Winter Landscape" is an oil painting on canvas by noted Norwegian/American artist Elmer S. Berge, 1892-1956. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The canvas size is 24 x 30 inches, framed size is 28.25 x 34.5 inches. Framed in original frame. The artwork is in very good condition, there is a small 1/8 inches well restored hole in the canvas, barely visible from the front, the frame is in good condition, see picture #5 for detail.

About the artist:

Elmer Berge was born on Finnoy Island near Stavanger, Norway in 1892. As a young child he showed a strong interest in art and began studying it when we was eight years old. He emigrated to the United States around 1910 and settled in Chicago, Illinois. Berge attended the Art Institute of Chicago and lived in the area until 1918. From 1918-1922, Berge returned to Norway and studied under the English artist Matthew Williams Thompson. He traveled around Norway painting the fjords and varied Norwegian landscape. After his travels to Norway, Berge settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota and continued to paint. He won an award for his paintings that he exhibited at the Minnesota State Fair in 1932 and 1936. He painted with several well known Minnesota artists such as Cameron Booth and Frederic Calhoun. Berge was a member of the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. He died unexpectedly in 1956 after an art exhibition he had in Rochester, Minnesota. The work of Elmer Berge is held in numerous collections in the U.S. and Norway. See less
