About the artist.
Hernando Vines Soto was the Son of a French engineer of Catalan origin and Maria Soto (daughter of a former president of Honduras and a native Guatemalan), and nephew of the pianist Ricardo Viñes . With the outbreak of World War I , the Viñes leave Paris and after visiting several points of the French geography, settle in Madrid . When he returned to Paris in 1919 , he presented his works to Picasso,who advised him to enter the Academy of Sacred Art founded by Maurice Denis and George Desvallières.. Later, he also attended André Lhote's classes and worked in the studio of Gino Severini . In 1922 , he visited the Monastery of Silos with his father.
In 1923 he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in Paris and made friends with Manuel Ángeles Ortiz who introduced him to the circle of Spanish painters of what will be called the School of Paris : Joaquín Peinado (with whom he would share a studio), Celso Lagar , Pancho Cossío and Francisco Bores . Together with them he will regularly exhibit at the Percier and Max Berger galleries.
In 1931 he joins Lulú Jourdain (daughter of the decorator, writer and politician Francis Jourdain), who becomes his muse and habitual model. The 13 of maypole of 1936 , Lulu and Hernando held a farewell dinner at the Cervantes Hostal de Madrid, attended by , among others: Luis Buñuel , Francis and Federico brothers García Lorca , Rafael Alberti , Miguel Hernández , Neruda , María Teresa León , José Caballero and Pepín Bello . In the autumn of 1939 , his daughter was born, they had to flee the Paris occupied by the Germans, taking refuge in San Juan de Luz , next to the Franco-Spanish border. His painting of rich colorful Fauvist became necessarily intimate. Although in 1946 he participated in the exhibition of «Art of the republican school» in the Manés Palace of Prague. A retrospective of his work was organized by the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid in 1965 . Since that year, the exhibitions follow one another. He dies in Paris at 88 years of age.
He has work at the Pompidou Center museum in Paris; the Reina Sofía Art Center of Madrid; in the museums of Castres and Albí , in France; in the National Museum of Prague ; in the Museum of Tel Aviv Museum , in Israel; and in several institutions in South America and the United States. less
