Finest bone china, thin as egg shell, shiny and sounds as crystal when tapped with a fingernail
Neoclassical design, simple yet very sophisticated with orange/red (maroon or salmon red) meanders over the white bodies and gilt highlights on the rims and handles
The set includes six pedestaled cups with saucers, a large lidded sugar bowl and a lidded creamer pitcher
Made by the hand of the world's famous artist and designer Emile Galle (1846-1904), who is considered to be one of the major innovators in the French Art Nouveaux movement. He was noted for his designs of Art Nouveaux glass art and Art Nouveaux furniture, and was the founder of the Ecole de Nancy (Nancy School), a movement of design in the city of Nancy, France
Although best known for his art glass and furniture, he experimented with ceramics as well. His father Charles, was a very famous ceramist and glass maker, working also for the royal family. Emile Gallé, at age of 16 went to learn at his family atelier Maison Galle - Reinemer, where he become an assistant of his father and drew many of the designs. In 1874 the elder Gallé turned completely the family business over to Émile. After years traveling and encyclopaedical studies from philosophy to botany to painting design and art, he settled in Nancy
The presented here tea set is very unique and unusual, since the atelier worked with glass, ceramic and faience mostly. Emile Galle abandoned his work with ceramics after 1892. (reference: Wikipedia)
All the pieces, including the lids, bear a golden handwritten signature: "Galle Reinemer a Nancy"
