Add a classic American touch to your home with this complete and remarkable set of historical hardware consisting of identical pressed glass door knobs with fixed brass shanks and original mortise lock. This residential privacy set is one of the earliest forms of hardware manufactured by E. Robinson & Co.(1839-1905) in Boston, Massachusetts. The company became one of the leading hardware makers in America during the mid 1800s and was able to patent the innovative glass knob with brass shank in 1837. Enoch Robinson supplied hardware in Boston for the old city hall, the old state house, and elegant hotels like the Parker House, Young’s Hotel, and Adams House. The Parker House (now the Omni Parker House) is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in the country. The banquet hall doors still retain locks and knobs made by Robinson. In Washington, D.C., some of Robinson’s fixtures still operate doors in the United States Treasury building. They were ordered at various times between 1861 and 1864 for the addition to the west wing of the building.
Remarkably this entire set has remained intact. The mortise lock retains its original skeleton key and the deadbolt, latch and locking mechanisms are all complete and all in perfect working condition. The glass is free of chips and cracks and all brass surfaces have an intact patina. The set shows normal signs of wear from age and use and is indeed very characteristic of quality craftsmanship and ingenuity during the mid 19th century. The mortise brass plate has been marked by the manufacturer and includes the brass strike plate and key escutcheon. This rare and important find would make a fine addition to any classic neo-classical or traditional home. The set is ready for installation and was built to last many more years.
