British businessmen Charles France and his Danish partner Eric Daverkosen founded France & Son in 1948. In the early years the company was called France & Daverkosen, Charles's son James joined the company in 1957 which resulted in the name change to France & Son. At the very beginning the company produced mattresses. They then developed the idea to use two simple loose sprung cushions on their first chairs which would pave the way for a whole new generation of minimalist framed modernist chairs. In 1953 Charles France introduced an industrial technique that revolutionized the Danish furniture industry. He developed the use of a tungsten-carbide alloy saw which did not dull when sawing teak wood. With this new method Charles France worked with Finn Juhl to launch the first industrially manufactured furniture produced from teak, the Model 133 Spadestolen chair. Part of France & Sons success can be attributed to the fact that they were the first furniture company to design their furniture to be dismantled very easily for shipping. France & Son was sold to the Danish designer Poul Cadovius in 1967, the company continued to trade under the France & Son name for a couple more years before Cadovius renamed the company Cado. Cado continued producing furniture from the factory for a further ten years or so.
John Stuart or John Stuart Inc. was an American furniture production company & elite retail showroom in Grand Rapids Michigan from 1948 through 1956. They produced and sold high end Early English, Georgian, American, and French Revival reproductions as well as modern residential furniture to the trade only. John Stuart was a board chairman of the John Widdicomb Company and John Stuart Inc.
Ole Wanscher was a Danish furniture designer. He was one of the leading figures in the Scandinavian Design movement (part of the Mid-Century Modernism), at a time when Scandinavian Design achieved worldwide popularity. He studied at the Danish School of Art and Design. After completing his studies, Wanscher worked with Klint from 1924 to 1927, at which time he set up his own office, specializing in furniture design. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Wanscher, working with master joiner A. J. Iverson, produced dozens of designs now seen as modern classics. In the 1950s, Wanscher left his private firm and began an association with P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik A/S that would last for the rest of his professional life. One of Wanscher's most famous pieces was his so-called "Egyptian Stool" of 1960. He was also influenced by Greek and Chinese design. One of Wanscher's best known designs is the teak easy chair designed for France & Son in 1951.
