Description: This is a very large Qing Dynasty, Jiaqing period (1796–1820) ancestral painting with an unusual number of family members in … more This is a very large Qing Dynasty, Jiaqing period (1796–1820) ancestral painting with an unusual number of family members in one portrait. These were made to honor deceased family members. There are 28 people in this portrait so it must have been a very important family with high-ranking officials over multiple generations. The wonderful expressive faces, each with such distinct character all dressed in elaborately detailed traditional robes, with embroidered chest panels and collars, jeweled crowns, and dangling pearls.

Bought from the reputable Chen Gallery in Santa Cruz CA around 2010. It is painted on paper and mounted to a pale gray-colored silk jacquard fabric. The frame has classical Chinese brass hardware. Because of its size and weight, the back is completely encased in wood with two horizontal wood supports. These portraits are painted with mineral colors and ink generally on paper mounted to silk. They are traditionally unsigned.

I sincerely apologize for the terrible reflections. It is quite difficult to photograph this large-scale image under glass.
