The backgammon board has noticeable cracks in the lemonwood points and calamander throughout (see image). New green felt has been added to the back of the reversible top. It has been made from a wide variety of luxurious exotic wood including lemonwood, calamander, Macassar, rosewood, and pine. From the 17th to the 19th Century, card and board games were means to socialize and gamble large sums of money among the wealthy. Game tables are an example of specialized furniture beautifully crafted by a skilled cabinetmaker for such clients.
This luxury game table has a reversible table top that has an inlaid chessboard as well as a green felt card surface. The chessboard has been handcrafted out of Macassar wood, which gives it zebra-like dark brown stripes. Beneath that, there is a calamander backgammon board surface with inlaid lemonwood points that have been dyed green and orange. Each opposite end of the table has a compartment with a leather ribbon handle for loose game pieces. The skirting of the table features an inlaid old palace parquet design that contrasts beautifully with the natural stripes of the rosewood legs. The table sits on lovely cabriole legs with brass caster cups on the feet. It is an exceptionally versatile piece of furniture that can also be used as a coffee table when one is relaxing. less
