Rare mid-century MCM Scandinavian dining chair model PJ-3-2 designed by Grete Jalk. While simple in design, the back of the chair has a graceful curve to it characteristic of Scandinavian designed pieces. Produced by P. Jeppesen in Denmark. This item is marked on the base with PJ for the manufacturer and a circular logo with a #15 on the bottom of the chair in two places. Female Danish designer Grete Jalk, 1920-2006.
From the book Modern Scandinavian Design from Laurence King Publishing, 2017: "Grete Jalk trained as a cabinetmaker, then studied at the Danish Design School and under Kaare Klimt at KADK's furniture school. Experimenting with plywood, she developed a series of highly sculptural chairs in the 1960s. For the manufacturer Poul Jeppesen, she designed numerous comfortable furniture pieces that were distinguished by clean lines and were popular both in Denmark and the USA...Having trained as a joiner at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen....in 1946, having completed her studies, Jalk won first prize in the annual Cabinetmakers' Guild competition in Copenhagen. She opened her own studio in 1953 and began designing elegant Modern pieces based on traditional furniture types, notable for their invisible joints and subtle organic lines. As a prominent member of the Danish design community, Jalk also helped to publicize Scandinavian design internationally through her editorship of Mobilia Magazine from 1956-62 and with her design of several government-sponsored travelling exhibitions."
