Lusterware is a technique that is centuries old. The iridescent quality is the result of a metallic glaze that is applied during the last firing. Traditionally, lusterware objects that are marked "Made in Japan" were made from 1921 to around 1941. Prior to 1921, pieces were marked with the word "Nippon." After World War II, from 1947 to 1952, pottery and porcelain were marked "Made in Occupied Japan" or "Occupied Japan”. After 1952, “Made in Japan” became acceptable, again. This elegantly lustrous set was made sometime after 1952. It states “Made in Japan” on the underside of each piece but no maker. In excellent condition with little to no visible wear. Its look-and-feel is akin to porcelain lusterware made by Noritake. The luster has a mother-of-pearl effect which changes depending on lighting. It’s quite beautiful and rich looking with its gold accents and medallion and petite floral and foliate motif. The set consist of a teapot, covered sugar bowl and open creamer; each has an underplate. Together the set weighs 1 lb. 12 oz. The teapot measures 6½” x 7” W/H (height includes lid) - capacity 2½ cups; sugar bowl with lid 3” x 3¾”W/H (height includes lid) – capacity 6 oz.; open creamer 3½” x 3” W/H – capacity 5 oz.; underplate 4½” x 1½” D/H apiece; medium is porcelain lusterware; colors include a luminescent creamy off white background with gold accents and mother of pearl variations in color depending on lighting. For a collector of lusterware, this tea service will be a great add to that collection or a fabulous gift for someone who is.
