After many hours of research, he is still a mystery to me. "Hand over Fist Salute" has many meanings in Chinese culture, depending on male or female and the positioning of the hands. Variations of this gesture can be used as a traditional Chinese greeting, a call to war or peace in martial arts, a sign of respect and grieving for loved ones. The hands in this position often symbolise Chinese rivers and the flow of yin and yang. What is unusual about this piece is the position of the right hand wrapped over a closed left fist. From my understanding, this position is typically reversed for men (left hand over right fist). I've never seen another wood carving quite like him. One of my favorite finds. less
