"Tamara de Lempica" 2021, is a playful original acrylic chalk painting by artist Patrick Briggs for Palm Springs Regency. The piece is realized on a reclaimed wooden nightstand that features two pull drawers with "campaign" style inset pull hardware that sits flush to the surface. Briggs has chosen a Prussian Blue background for the top surface as well as the two flanking side panels. It can best be described as a blue-black or a black-blue in its tone. The top of the cabinet features a full figured reclining woman he painted in homage to the nudes painted by polish artist Tamara de Lempica. The background has a dry matte hand while the nude woman's image has a glossy epoxy overlay for its effect, as well as, for protection. The front facing doors, as previously described, have metal brass tone pull handles that have been given a turquoise leaning patina finish. The top drawer has a single pull compartment but is disguised as a side by side double drawer and has thick panels that frames that separate the front into two halves. The bottom drawer is also a single and is ultimately the same size as the top one. The lower is also framed by thick paneled frames which are painted in an eggshell ivory white with dark blue contrasting trim that creates frames within frames. The inside of the framed decorative drawer panels is painted in an explosive powdery cloud of blues. greens. rust. and yellow tones with a clear layer of epoxy.
PATRICK BRIGGS for PALM SPRINGS REGENCY
Patrick Briggs is Southern California born and Hawaiian raised artist whose career started at 8 years old. in local theater productions. He later appeared in the role of gay rock musician Luke in the 1997 film, 'All Over Me' as well as the New York Theatre Workshop version of Rent, in the role of Tom Collins. Meanwhile in "Renaissance Man" style, Pat Briggs became a co-founding member and lead singer of the glam rock band Psychotica in 1994. Since then the band has toured throughout Europe and Asia including performances at Lollapolooza and other music festivals worldwide. Briggs is credited for crafting his own costumes and glam-rock makeup looks that were dubbed as body art. In fact, after an early appearance at Don Hill's legendary New York nightclub that his stage persona captivated his audience. In attendance were the curators of the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. They were so moved by his look and sound that they dubbed Psychotica as 'The future of rock 'n' roll" and installed an effigy of Briggs into the Hall's most audacious exhibit. In an interview when asked how it was possible for such a just of the gates band to get such an excellent placement in the Hall's Museum, Briggs remarked, "It's me on a neon cross bound in Saran Wrap,... in the exhibit, there's wax figures of Trent Reznor, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and me".
In 2020 Psychotica put their upcoming tour and new album tracks on a hiatus due to the 'Shelter in Place' necessity brought on by the Corona Virus pandemic aka Covid 19. In true form, Briggs was unable to sit idle. After seeing some of the pieces of furniture and murals that Briggs had been painting over the years for himself, his longtime friend, John Arguelles the owner of an online resale business encouraged him to create a series of unique one of a kind artistic pieces engaging vintage furniture as canvas. Briggs continues to explore the relationship of function and art with a series of hand painted vintage furnishings exclusively for Palm Springs Regency.
