This handmade, angular, cubist, sculptural work of art, was made as a gift to a sailing friend, as Evans frequently made his home along the New England coast.
It's is very apparent it was hand made and does not have the perfect 90 degree angles of his mirrored furnishings
The piece had been rescued from years of laying in a damp, coastal cellar. When found it was rusted and beginning to rot. This was far past brutalist, as I would have kept it in. It was dying.
It has been completely restored, professionally sandblasted, and powder coated. We really didn't know if it would withstand sandblasting in its fragile condition., but the finished result was spectacular.
The family donated it and was purchased by a New England Vintage dealer.
The condition was unsalable, however, he did know its origins and well you have to try to salvage something this special.
The finish is a semi-gloss, not mirrored, metallic gold. It shows parts that were either created off-center to a straight fulcrum line or became slightly crooked in the poor storage conditions and travels from one location to eventually this small
New England Vintage shop.
Even brown/red and layered with rust, the extraordinary design was completely apparent.
It's quite large and substantial.
It measures 2 Feet wide x 1.5 Feet Tall x 5" diameter.
The candle holders have a short spikes to pierce a candle.
I like them displayed with the white disk shaped rounded candles, as shown. If you do as well, l will gladly include a set of new candles.
If it was signed, it isn't anymore, especially with the amount of sandblasting needed to remove the pitted, damaged surface.
Just a wonderful MCM find with a special legacy.
A joyous save! less
