Stunning rope chair by Maruni, circa 1950s. This all-original example has a rope seat and back with the original braided nylon rope and sculptural ebonized beechwood frame. It retains its original label. The painted surface is in stunning condition. It is extremely light yet strong due to its construction utilizing tension and compression and hidden glueless Japanese joinery.
Nothing else looks quite like the classic Maruni rope chair. The sheer artistry of the intricate routing of the single length of rope is enough to make this piece a conversation starter. (In fact, this very chair, in ebony finish, had its 15 minutes of fame in episode two of the Netflix TV series “Beef”, where it featured as a prominent extra in the fictional “65 Chairs” exhibit.)
This piece would look excellent in any Mid-Century Modern or Asian-influenced context. Relatively small and low to the ground, it manages to be the star of the show precisely because it looks so different. Note: no cushion is included with this item, although you are free to provide your own for increased seating comfort.
Maruni Wood Industry traces its origins to 1928 Hiroshima, Japan and was a key promoter of Western-style furniture in its home country during the post-war years. The company set several benchmarks in the speed and precision of its assembly line. Maruni continues to expand the technical and artistic boundaries of lightweight wood furniture to this day. less
