Barth’s standing practice was to sign her work “C. Kavon”—using her first initial and the ananym of her maiden name, Novak. CHRISTINE BARTH (1920–1992) emigrated to the US with a toddler son in her early thirties in 1954, having survived the Allied bombing of Hamburg during WWII in which much of her family was lost. A preference for the palette knife had emerged during studies at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK). She maintained a studio at her new home in eastern Pennsylvania and frequently sold work through NYC galleries. less
