This is just a great original piece. Back a few years ago, I acquired a major collection of the artist's work and have only recently got around to cataloging it. It descended through a member of her family and spans her life throughout the many continents she worked. The artist was the daughter of an important missionary and followed a dual career path of artist and catholic missionary in china. A recent essay about the artist (journal of canadian art history in 2013. Volume 34 no 2) outlines her history including exhibitions in china as well as canada and the united states. She exhibited at the art students league, society of independent artists, women's art association of canada, and others. Her family kept an artist's home in georgian bay that was frequently visited by fred varley (1881-1969) and other group of seven artists including ay jackson (1882-1974). This work is very much in that style.
This is a stunning pastel on paper measuring 14 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches and is in outstanding as created condition. Signed and dated lower right. Archival matted and shrink wrapped over (that is what the glare in the photo is). If her work interests you, I have an oil painting available for sale in my store.
