It features an iconic photo artwork image originally created by Man Ray in 1924 titled " Violon D'Ingres ".
Man Ray ( 1890 - 1978 ) born Emmanuel Raditzky was an American visual artist of a Russian Jewish background who spent most of his career in Paris. He was a contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements. He produced major works in a variety of media, and considered himself a painter above all.
Best known for his photography, he was a renowned pioneering fashion and portrait photographer. Significant members of the art works, including Pablo Picasso, james Joyce, Gertrude Stein, jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, and Peggy Guggenheim posed for his camera.
Ray was responsible for several important technical innovations in Modern Art, filmmaking, and photography. His explorations of film, painting, sculpture, assemblage, and prototypes of what would eventually be called Performance Art an Conceptual Art are lasting contributions to the Modern Art world. Artworks by Man Ray are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
" Violon D'Ingres " French for Ingres's violin is a black and white photograph created by Man Ray in 1924. It became one of his most iconic and well known works of art. The photograph takes its name from a popular French expression, " Le Violon D'Ingres ", which means a hobby, in reference to French Neoclassical painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, who played a violin as a pastime when he wasn't painting. Man Ray admired Ingres's work and drew inspiration from his painting " The Valpincon Bather " for his photograph.
His model and then lover Kiki De Montparnasse posed for the photograph, depicted similarly to the female nude of Ingres. Man Ray later painted in a print of the photo the F - Holes of the violin on her back and then rephotographed the print, creating the final iconic image. The title humorously turns the model torso into a musical instrument and also alludes to the fact that she was both the artist's model and lover at the same time.
