The Pop Art poster print is published by Corita Prints - North Hollywood, California, printed in 1980 in an unnumbered limited edition by Haddad's Fine Art Inc. California. It features an artwork image by Kent titled " Be of Love ", inspired by the famous poet E.E. Cummings words " Be of love ( a little ) more careful than of anything ".
Corita Kent ( 1918 - 1986 ) was an artist, educator, an advocate for social justice. At the age of 18 she entered the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary, eventually teaching in and becoming the head of the art department at Immaculate Heart College. Her classes were an Avant - Garde mecca for prominent artists and inventors such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Cage, Saul Bass, and Charles and Ray Eames among others.
Inspired by the works of Andy Warhol, Kent began using popular culture as raw material for her work. After leaving the religious order, it evolved from figurative and religious to incorporating advertising images and slogans, popular song lyrics, biblical verses, and literature. She embraced the revolutions of the time including The Vietnam War, Civil Rights, and Women's Rights.
Throughout the 1960's her artworks with messages of love and peace, became increasingly political urging viewers to consider poverty, racism, and injustice. Her innovative methods pushed back the limitations of the two dimensional mediums of the times. Artworks by Kent are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
