This pair of bookends dating from the early 1900's, depict an Inuit/Eskimo and his wife sitting on their haunches. Both have distinctively drawn faces that peek out from underneath their parkas.
Bookends date back to the time period that missionary Wilfred Grenfell sailed to Labrador and Newfoundland to establish the Grenfell Mission and provide care to itinerant fisherman and their families. Part of this mission was to encourage the production of crafts by the local population, part of which resulted in these bookends.
"Labrador" sticker found on both bookends, more legible on one of the pair. This style of bookends were manufactured from 1909-1930.
