This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Art Deco pictorial rug features a variety of traditional Chinese motifs spread across an abrashed gray field. Floating in the center of the field, a large pagoda and accompanying small buildings sit beneath a blossoming peach tree. Additional pagodas decorate each corner of the field. Two stags appear at either end of the center pagoda, each bearing a flowering vase upon their backs. Deer are considered to be a symbol of longevity and prosperity. In ancient times they were believed to be the only creature able to find the elusive lingzhi fungus, which was thought to grant immortality to those who consumed it. The fantastic border features a number of bird species, large chrysanthemums and other blossoms. Lovely peacocks adorn the corners of the border and are thought to represent dignity and beauty. Paradise flycatchers perched upon branches decorate the sides of the piece. In Mandarin the word for the flycatcher is “shou dai niao,” meaning “ribbon bird.” Since “shou” is a homonym for the word for longevity, the bird is a symbol of long life. Cranes and pairs of mandarin ducks pictured amongst chrysanthemums decorate each ends of the piece. As with the deer and paradise flycatchers, both cranes and chrysanthemums are symbols of longevity. Mandarin ducks are often pictured in pairs, as they are here, and are an emblem of conjugal fidelity. The lovely color palette, comprised mostly of shades of gray with blue, deep red, and tan accents, is elegant and peaceful. With its depth of meaning, soft hues, and overall sense of harmony, this antique Chinese Art Deco pictorial rug would be a wonderful addition to nearly any interior. It is rendered in variegated shades of gray, stone gray, dove gray, oyster gray, heather gray, taupe, oatmeal, ecru, sand, beige, khaki, tan, fawn, sienna, cerulean, Prussian blue, sky blue, true blue, navy blue, cobalt, indigo, ink blue, royal blue, maroon, wine, brick red, scarlet red, ivory, cream, vanilla, pale yellow, lichen, and other accent colors. It would be perfect for a small space, reading nook, master bathroom, grand foyer, designer entry, study, studio, den, walk-in closet, stair landing, alcove, mudroom, entryway, bedroom, private library, private chambers, living room, front room, wine cellar, conservatory, drawing room, trophy room, game room, music room, listening room, or hotel lobby. Iconic in its styling, this rug would be well-suited for a wide range of interior styles less
