A large and lyrical oil still-life showing a view from the artist's window onto a sun-drenched landscape with a vase of pink tulips and a pot of geraniums standing on the window-sill in foreground. A breezy and light-filled evocation of summer by this notable Danish Modernist who exhibited throughout Europe and was the recipient of numerous juried awards and prizes.
Axel Bentzen commenced his art studies as a child and, at the age of 14, was already copying Old Master paintings at Copenhagen's National Museum of Art. He traveled to Italy in 1919 and, from pent every second year there or in Paris, painting and furthering his studies of the principles of Modernism. He was the recipient of numerous scholarships including the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone scholarship twice (1925, 1927) and the Copenhagen Akademie scholarship three times (1927, 1929, 1931) among others. He exhibited internationally with success including at the Charlottenborg from 1922, as well as at prominent salons in Paris, Berlin and Venice. Bentzen is well-listed in all relevant art reference works including both Benezit's Dictionary of Artists and Thieme-Becker's Kunstlexikon (Vollmer Supplement). We are pleased to offer this light and lyrical still-life.
