Balancing traditional sensibility and French Coastal style with nostalgic tribal elements, this hand knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak rug is an amalgam of Caucasian Qashqai Tribe influence. The abrashed creamy-beige field showcases a Caucasian design composed of three square medallions patterned with Ram's Horn and Hands on Hip motifs. It is enclosed with an Elibelinde motif border flanked with an inner and outer crenelated fence guard border. Though deceptively simple, this vintage Turkish rug is steeped in Anatolian history. Derived from the virility of the Ram's Horn motif, the Classic Elibelinde motif, also known as the “hands on hips” or goddess motif, is thought to represent motherhood and fertility while ram’s horns represent masculinity and power. The fertility bereket motifs that appear combine the symbols of both man and woman, often referred to as ram’s Horn and hands-on-hips motifs, into one design with a diamond in the centre.
