Chéret began his career as a principal assistant to sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, whose daughter he married in 1868. He became a member of the Societe nationale des beaux-arts in 1894 and was acclaimed for his small figural groups, vases and Jardinieres realized in a neo-Baroque style as exemplified by this this piece. less
