We have left the art in it's original frame as well which has hand made glass and solid wood panel backing. Antique original, signed German hand touched oil on panel chromolithograph "Come Baby" by Meyer Von Bremen. What a rare and unique find! This piece came straight out of a Trousdale Estates, Beverly Hills art collector's home and was passed down multiple generations. German artist Johann Georg Meyer Von Bremen was famous for creating intricate biblical, peasant, and family scenes. This scene is no different. It makes you feel almost as if you are part of the family being portrayed as the mother and family gathers around to encourage the baby to take it's first steps. If you look very closely you will see that the artwork is almost 3D with different layers of colors and brushstrokes. This unique look is part of the beauty of German Style Chromolithographs. These were lithographs that were intended to duplicate oil paintings. The inks used were heavy, oil-based inks which when applied in several layers give a texture like that of an original oil painting. They were usually issued with no margins, and often mounted either on a canvas backing or a board.
This piece specifically is mounted on hand carved solid wooden panels. They were also almost always sold in frames and this piece follows suite. It is in it's original, regal frame with original glass. If you look closely you can see the glass if old, original, and hand made! A real piece of history. It has hand touched oil strokes on top of the chromolithograph (colored image printed by many applications of lithographic stones) and is signed in the bottom right hand corner "MEYER VON BREMEN 1874". It is professional framed and matted and is titled "Come Baby". Perfect for a collector, art lover, or a wall in your home that needs a special touch. The backside has a wire for easy, universal hanging on any wall. (We have an accompanying piece in our shop - "Handy Dandy". If you are interested in purchasing both send us a message)
About the artist:
Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (28 October 1813 Bremen, Germany – 4 December 1886 Berlin), commonly known as Meyer von Bremen, was a German painter who specialized in Biblical, peasant, and family scenes. In his 21st year, he went to Düsseldorf and began his studies at the Academy of Art there, which was led by Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow, the son of sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. In 1841, Meyer opened a studio of his own, but moved to Berlin as his fame increased (1853). While scenes from the Bible were first the subjects of his brush, he later turned his attention to incidents from popular life, especially among the Hessian peasantry, and finally to the portrayal of family life in its pathetic aspect. After taking up his residence at Berlin, he chose especially scenes from child life, which he rendered with spirited humor.
