Beautifully sculpted and featuring exquisite details, this Art Deco depiction of a seated, nude Mercury sitting on a bag of … Read more Beautifully sculpted and featuring exquisite details, this Art Deco depiction of a seated, nude Mercury sitting on a bag of coins indicating that he was the god of financial gain and commerce was sculpted by Mauritius Pfeiffer for the Volkstedt porcelain works in Germany. Volkstedt, located in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, dated back to the 18th century, and was known for its very Fine modeling into the mid-20th century. In the 1920s, Pfeiffer sculpted a number of figures for the company, some of which are in the collections of major museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In this case, Pfeiffer brings lovely attention to the details of his figure, including his fingers, toes and tendrils of hair extending from under his cap. See less
